Child Protection in India

Child protection in India relies on a comprehensive framework of laws, policies and programmes designed to ensure the safety, dignity and development of every child. The legal foundation includes the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015, the POCSO Act 2012, and the Child Labour Act.

As a child protection NGO in Delhi, TARA works in close collaboration with public institutions to ensure the respect of children’s rights and to promote safe, stable and supportive environments for their development. Our work spans community outreach, family intervention, residential care and aftercare, reaching over 500 children and families each year.

Legal framework

Child Placement Regulated by the Juvenile Justice Act

Decisions regarding child placement are made by the Child Welfare Committee, a statutory authority that carefully assesses each child’s situation and determines the most appropriate form of support.

When necessary, children are placed in a structured care environment where education, well-being and personal development are ensured. These placements are regularly reviewed to guarantee the child’s best interests remain the priority.

At TARA, all programmes strictly follow Indian child protection regulations. Teams receive continuous training and meet weekly across every programme to ensure consistency and quality of care. Learn more about how this applies in practice on our Family Intervention and Residential Care pages.

TARA approach

TARA Child Protection Policy

Centred on participation, dignity and individual attention, children are encouraged to express their views, communicate their needs and actively engage in their own development.

Through structured dialogue and daily interactions, children at TARA build confidence and develop the skills required to navigate their future independently. This approach strengthens trust, encourages responsibility, and creates a supportive environment where each child can progress at their own pace.

This policy is also central to our work on girls’ education and child participation, two areas where respectful, child-centred practice makes the greatest difference.

Empowerment

Empowering Children Through Participation

Children are encouraged to take part in decisions that affect their daily lives, building confidence, autonomy and communication skills for their long-term development.

By creating opportunities for dialogue and collective decision-making, TARA promotes a learning environment where children develop responsibility and self-esteem. This approach contributes to long-term development and supports children in becoming active participants in their own future.
