TARA Big Birds is our aftercare programme in India supporting young adults who grew up in TARA Homes or other Child Care Institutions as they transition into independent life in Delhi and beyond.
Turning 18 does not mean being ready to face adulthood alone. Many young people leaving care still need guidance, emotional support and practical assistance to pursue higher education, access employment and build a stable future. India’s Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 recognises this reality: Section 46 specifically mandates aftercare support for young adults leaving Child Care Institutions.
Through personalised mentoring, financial support and life-skills training, this aftercare programme in India ensures continuity of protection and empowerment beyond childhood.
A supported aftercare transition to independence
The programme accompanies each young adult according to their aspirations, vulnerabilities and pace of development. Coordinators, mentors and social workers provide continuous guidance during this critical life stage.
Our objective is clear: help young adults become confident, autonomous and financially independent while maintaining emotional stability and a strong sense of belonging.
Programme pillars
Workshops on budgeting, saving and financial planning prepare young adults for independent living.
Practical guidance helps them manage rent, daily expenses and long-term financial goals.
The transition to adulthood can be emotionally complex. Individual counselling, peer discussions and self-care activities support mental health and resilience.
TARA supports access to higher education, vocational training and professional certification programmes aligned with each young adult’s aspirations.
Internships, job readiness training and placement support help beneficiaries enter the workforce with confidence.
Young adults develop professional networks and gain practical experience in sectors such as hospitality, retail, services and administration.
Life-skills training strengthens autonomy, communication, decision-making and responsibility in daily life and professional environments.
A pathway shaped by real journeys
Every young adult follows a unique path. The aftercare programme adapts to their ambitions, whether academic, vocational or entrepreneurial. Continuous mentoring ensures that they remain supported while progressively gaining independence and responsibility.
Lokesh, from TARA to Hyatt Regency
Lokesh joined TARA as a child and gradually discovered his interest in the hospitality sector. After completing his secondary education, he accessed internships and professional training through TARA Big Birds.
He later joined a Food & Beverage training programme in Bangalore, strengthening his practical skills and confidence. Returning to Delhi, he successfully passed an interview with Hyatt Regency and joined their training programme.
Alongside his professional experience, Lokesh is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Tourism Management through distance learning. His journey illustrates how sustained support can transform early vulnerability into long-term opportunity.
Why an aftercare programme in India matters
Young people leaving care are at high risk of isolation, unemployment and financial instability without continued support.
Continued guidance is essential to prevent setbacks during the critical transition to adult life.
TARA Big Birds combines mentorship, education and employment support with emotional care to bridge this gap.
A sense of community and belonging reduces isolation and builds resilience in young adults leaving care.
