Volunteering at TARA: Loïc’s Story
After a year volunteering at TARA in Delhi, Loïc shares his experience supporting children, teams and community programs — and what it truly means to give time to others.
I am Loïc, 59 years old, and I volunteered at TARA for a year. It was my second long-term volunteer experience. Over the past 25 years, my professional life has taken me abroad — Spain, India, China and Reunion Island.
I have known TARA since my first trip to India. When the opportunity arose to take a break and dedicate time to others, it felt natural to return and contribute.
Sharing experience and supporting projects
My objective was simple: to be useful, share my professional experience and support TARA’s teams. One of my main responsibilities was helping organize the relocation of the TARA Tots house. Through planning and teamwork, the move went smoothly and the children quickly felt at home.
Beyond this major project, my daily tasks were diverse. I taught Spanish to the girls, French to the boys and spent several hours each day supporting activities with the youngest children.
Together with Akanksha, who oversees the TARA Outreach Centre, we also worked on the rehabilitation of the centre’s building, in consultation with an engineer and with input from the children themselves.
A meaningful human experience
I was never bored. Children are an endless source of energy. Each visit to a program brought renewed joy. From the beginning, I was struck by their zest for life, curiosity, enthusiasm and respect.
Volunteering at TARA means receiving at least as much as you give. The children’s generosity is extraordinary. The staff deserve special recognition for their dedication, patience and love. And a special mention to Caroline and the entire team for staying strong and committed despite the challenges brought by the pandemic.
