Understanding Our Work

Opening of the new TARA Outreach Centre in Sanjay Colony

After months of collective work, TARA officially opened a new Outreach Centre in Sanjay Colony, providing education and social support to vulnerable children and families within their own community.

The inauguration took place on January 25th in the presence of local families, children, mothers and members of the TARA team. Even before the official opening, activities had already begun and the centre is quickly becoming a vibrant space for learning, protection and community support.

Building on a proven model

The opening of the Sanjay Colony centre builds on the success of TARA’s first outreach programme launched in Saidulajab in 2019, which demonstrated the impact of supporting children while keeping them within their families and communities.

After five years of positive outcomes, TARA decided to replicate this model in another community with similar needs.

Why Sanjay Colony?

Located in Okhla Phase II, South Delhi, Sanjay Colony is a densely populated resettlement area where families face difficult living conditions despite nearby industrial activity.

Many households rely on garment industry jobs with limited income, and access to essential services such as education, healthcare and sanitation remains insufficient.

Between May and June 2024, TARA conducted a baseline study involving 332 residents to better understand the community’s needs and identify children and families requiring support.

Immediate impact on the community

The centre already supports 80 registered children, including those currently out of school and others enrolled in formal education. Many attend daily learning sessions, while others remain on the waiting list.

By the end of 2025, TARA aims to reach more than 100 children and strengthen its support for families within the community.

A safe space for children to grow

The TARA Outreach Centre in Sanjay Colony provides a safe, nurturing environment where children can learn, develop skills and build stronger relationships with their families.

By focusing on education, protection and community engagement, TARA works to prevent neglect, exploitation and family separation.
