Emergencies & Crisis Response

TARA Stands Strong

During the devastating second wave of COVID-19 in India, TARA mobilised all its resources to protect children, support staff, and respond to the emergency with resilience and solidarity.

Facing an unprecedented health crisis

The new wave of COVID-19 hit India with unprecedented intensity. By April 2021, the country was recording hundreds of thousands of new cases daily, while Delhi faced critical oxygen shortages and overwhelmed hospitals.

Well-wishers of TARA were worried — and so were we. After already enduring the challenges of 2020, the team was exhausted, yet ready to act once again as the situation worsened.

Protecting children and staff

Within a single week, 44 children and staff members tested positive. As a family would, we cared for one another, implemented strict health protocols, and ensured close monitoring of everyone’s condition.

TARA Boys and TARA Girls were placed under quarantine, with caregivers present 24/7. Isolation areas were created, testing was organised, and safety equipment secured to protect both children and staff.

Thanks to the support of generous donors, an oxygen concentrator was delivered and proved lifesaving for one of our caregivers. Fortunately, most children and team members recovered without severe complications.

Supporting vulnerable communities

The situation was equally alarming in Saidulajab, where our community-based programme operates. The Outreach Centre had to close again during the lockdown, leaving families without income or access to basic resources.

The team quickly reorganised to respond to urgent needs: food distribution, health monitoring, and support to maintain family stability during the crisis.

Unity, resilience and solidarity

TARA stands strong because of its unity. Staff put their fears aside to protect the children. Caregivers worked tirelessly, fundraisers mobilised resources, and even those who were ill expressed their desire to return quickly to support the team.

In such uncertain times, children witness the strength of solidarity, courage, and compassion. These values help them grow and understand that even the harshest challenges can be overcome together.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has reached out to support us. Your help remains essential to continue protecting vulnerable children and communities.
