A Home for Children in Need of Care and Protection
TARA’s residential care programmes provide protection and long-term support to children who cannot safely remain with their families, as defined under child protection frameworks in India. Each children’s home in Delhi operates as a small, family-like environment where every child is known, supported, and cared for individually. Placement is always a measure of last resort, decided by the competent child-protection authorities.
All children hosted in TARA homes for children come from situations of severe vulnerability: abuse, neglect, abandonment, extreme poverty, or exposure to violence. They are legally placed under our care following an order issued by the Child Welfare Committee.
Residential care at TARA is built around a simple principle: every child deserves a safe home, stable relationships, and access to education to rebuild their future.
Our work aligns with the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 and the decisions of the Child Welfare Committees, which mandate protection, rehabilitation, education, and reintegration of children in need of care and protection.
A family-like model of care
TARA operates small-scale homes for children hosting a maximum of 20 children each, allowing individual attention and emotional stability. The objective is not only to protect children, but to help them recover, grow, and become independent adults.

π Story from the field
Sanjay finds his path
After his mother died in infancy, Sanjay was passed from one uncaring relative to another, eventually suffering neglect and abuse. In 2013, he and his brother were placed in TARA Boys. At first withdrawn and fearful, he slowly rebuilt with steady care, emotional support, and quality education. He completed Class 12 with 85%, participated in treks, dance and French classes, and became a mentor to younger boys. His dream, once unspoken, is now shared with pride: to join the armed forces.

Why residential care remains essential
While family-based care is always prioritised, some children cannot safely remain at home. A dedicated home for children in Delhi ensures:
Immediate protection from violence or neglect.
Continuity of education and health care.
Stable emotional relationships and safe daily routines.
Preparation for reintegration or independent adulthood.
“We do not solve conflicts between children with sanctions. We help them understand what happened, express how they feel, and find a solution together.”
