Launching the Health Program at TARA Outreach Centre

At TARA Outreach Centre, we believe that good health and safe living conditions are essential for a child’s development. Our new health program aims to support families and children in vulnerable communities in Delhi.

Health as a foundation for child development

On September 9th, TARA launched a new Health Program at the TARA Outreach Centre (TOC) in Saidulajab to strengthen child welfare and support families in vulnerable situations.

Since 2019, TOC has worked closely with the local community, particularly on children’s education. However, we firmly believe that good health and sanitary living conditions are equally essential for a child’s development.

According to the World Health Organization, poor access to healthcare and a lack of awareness about health issues remain key factors contributing to child vulnerability.

Listening to the needs of the community

After two challenging years during the COVID-19 pandemic, the relationship between TARA and the community has grown stronger. Families see the Outreach Centre not only as a safe space for their children but also as a support system for themselves.

A household survey revealed strong demand for healthcare support: three-fourths of families requested medical camps, and two-thirds expressed the need for awareness sessions on physical and mental health. Many explained they could not access healthcare due to lack of time and fear of treatment costs.

Understanding local health challenges

Between January and March 2022, TARA conducted an in-depth survey involving 65 households and 325 community members. The objective was to understand their concerns, needs, and awareness levels regarding health, nutrition, vaccination, and hygiene.

  • 43% reported frequent illness
  • 68% rely on public drinking water despite pollution risks
  • 86% use shared toilets, increasing infection risks
  • 18% of women use cloth during menstruation
  • 90% lack awareness about sexually transmitted infections
  • 40% of children do not eat three meals a day

This data provides a clearer picture of the health and living conditions of families and helps design an effective program tailored to their needs.

A program built for long-term impact

Following its launch, the program includes medical visits for children and regular meetings with parents to ensure health monitoring and preventive support.

Community members participate in sessions on hygiene, nutrition, reproductive health, mental health, and first aid. The aim is to empower families with knowledge and access to essential healthcare resources.
